Background

The virus arrived from Guinea in May 2014 and spread quickly through urban areas including Freetown and Kenema. The outbreak placed major strain on healthcare, education and the economy.

The country was declared free of active transmission in March 2016. A national survivor programme continues to provide medical and psychosocial care.
