Ebola strains
There are five known strains of the Ebola virus. Four cause disease in humans.
Zaire
The Zaire strain is the deadliest and most common Ebola variant — responsible for the West Africa epidemic and most outbreaks in DR Congo.
Sudan
The Sudan strain has no approved vaccine. Recent outbreaks in Uganda (2022) have been combated with experimental vaccines via ring trials.
Bundibugyo
The Bundibugyo strain was discovered in 2007 in Uganda and has only two known outbreaks to date.
Tai Forest
The Tai Forest strain has only ever been detected in one human: a researcher in Cote d'Ivoire in 1994.
Reston
The Reston strain does not cause disease in humans but does in primates and pigs. It is named after Reston, Virginia (US).
