Background
Uganda has had major outbreaks in 2000 (Gulu), 2007 (Bundibugyo) and 2022 (Mubende). The Sudan strain is especially concerning because the approved Ervebo vaccine only works against the Zaire variant.
The country has built a strong surveillance system and works closely with WHO and CDC. Experimental vaccines (such as the Sabin vaccine) were rapidly deployed via clinical ring trials during recent outbreaks.
