Background

The West Africa outbreak began in late 2013 in southeastern Guinea, in the village of Meliandou, and spread rapidly to Liberia and Sierra Leone. It became the first Ebola outbreak declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

In 2021 there was a smaller resurgence in Nzérékoré. No major outbreaks have been reported since.
