Background

Liberia's fragile health system was overwhelmed by the outbreak. Hundreds of healthcare workers became infected. International aid, treatment centers and community mobilisation eventually turned the tide.

The country was declared free of active transmission in 2016. Sporadic flare‑ups have since been linked to persistent infection in survivors (e.g. via seminal fluid).
